EA boss criticises ‘dull’ video games.
July 28, 2007
Today’s video games makers are failing to innovate enough and produce software that breaks the mould, according to the boss of a major games firm.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Electronic Arts (EA) chief executive John Riccitiello claimed that the industry is stuck in a ‘rinse and repeat’ cycle where new games look much the same as those released during the previous year.
He cited games such as Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft as examples of good practice, but said that many software firms are ‘boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play’.
The comments come ahead of the launch of this year’s E3 Expo trade show in Santa Monica, with titles expected to be showcased including Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero 3, Halo 3 and Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
EA is expected to show off its forthcoming Fifa 08, MySims and Need For Speed games at the event, among others.
