“FIFA Street 3 is about turning soccer icons into eye-popping characters through the game’s stylized art direction for an over-the-top arcade soccer experience,” said producer Joe Nickolls. “Ronaldinho, Crouch and Gattuso represent three of the different types of players available in our game and we were able to exaggerate their qualities to really create larger-than-life characters.”

Ronaldinho, the cover athlete on the original FIFA Street, is a global megastar and the Brazilian International and FC Barcelona midfielder’s list of accomplishments includes a FIFA World Cup winner’s medal, the 2004 and 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year, as well as the 2005 European Footballer of the Year award.

Joining Ronaldinho will be Italian World Cup-winning footballer Gennaro Gattuso. The creative midfielder, who plays for A.C. Milan, with whom he won the UEFA Champions League title in the 2002-03 and 2006-07 seasons, continues the tradition of world-class athletes donning the FIFA franchise covers. It is Gattuso’s first appearance on an EA SPORTS™ or EA SPORTS BIG cover.

Completing the trio of world class players will be Liverpool and England striker Peter Crouch. Liverpool’s top goal scorer in the 2006-07 season, Crouch has also been a consistent goal scorer for the England national team. He will have his 6’7’’ height amplified to compliment his ball-striking and finishing skills to create a new soccer experience.

Interview with David Grant.

December 5, 2007

David Grant, a Man-United fan, is a producer for Data Collection Group at Electronic Arts Canada. He has worked on several games like FIFA, Champions League, World Cup, EURO and the Rugby 06 and 07 titles from EA Sports.

David Grant

David Grant: I am originally from Australia where I grew up in the small town of Murwillumbah on the far north coast of NSW.

After a short stay in the US I moved to Canada and I joined Electronic Arts here in Canada as a Quality Assurance tester in 2005. The first game I worked on was FIFA 2006 and I have since worked on all successive FIFA titles as well as Champions League, World Cup, EURO and the Rugby 06 and 07 titles. I joined the Data Collection Group in November 2006 where I currently work as a producer.

The Data Collection Group is responsible for collecting data for all players and teams that is used for all of EA’s Football titles. We manage the integration of this data into the game as well as work with the artists and game teams to make sure the art assets are as close to real life as possible and to make sure the data is being used properly for the AI.

Can you please explain us briefly, what happens when a new league like A-League must be added to the game?

David Grant: When we add a new league to the game we firstly need to acquire the license for the league or for each team individually. Our Business Affairs and Licensing teams in the UK are responsible for contacting the league and teams and they then negotiate the terms of these agreements.
After we have confirmed that we will be adding a new league or new teams we then need to gather all of the data that is related to the league, teams and players. To do this we need to add people to our ever growing community which is currently at 100+ Data Editors and 300+ Data Reviewers.

Let me explain the Data Editor and Data Reviewer projects briefly. A Data Editor is a paid contract and the editor is responsible for a set number of teams. The Data Editor has set deadlines for the work that is required of them and they are responsible for making sure that all players are assigned to the correct teams and they also collect all data that we use in game for the teams and players that they are responsible for. Our Data Editors are some of the biggest football and FIFA fans out there and they are very dedicated to making the data as realistic as possible.

The Data Reviewer project is unpaid but is a great way for people to get some feedback for their favourite players and teams into the game. This Data Reviewer has no deadlines and is not responsible for collecting any data, it is just an opportunity for FIFA and football fans to help us to improve the data quality, so it is perfect for people that don’t have a lot of spare time to spend editing data but can occasionally provide some feedback on the players and teams that we have in game. When we need new Data Editors we will normally first check with our Data Reviewers for suitable candidates.

We are always trying to increase our community by adding people with great football knowledge from all around the world, so we have an website that use to identify these people. You can access this site here – http://www.eafootballtalentscout.com

Do you play FIFA 08 at home, or at EA … how do you see the gameplay of FIFA 08?

David Grant: I tend to play FIFA 08 mostly at work. I think the gameplay has improved a lot since last year with the biggest improvements on the 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

Our AI team has worked very hard to improve the quality of the gameplay for FIFA 08 and I think there is a very noticeable improvement on previous years.

You are of course a football fan, what is your favourite club?

David Grant: I have been a supporter of Manchester United since I started playing football as a young boy, mostly because of players like Peter Schmeichel, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and the baby faced assassin Ole-Gunnar Solskjær.
But I do enjoy watching football from all over the world to see the different styles of play and to look out for younger up and coming players.

There are many fans’ suggestions at FIFPlay.com about adding new leagues like Russian, Argentinean, and Chilean to FIFA 09; would it be possible to see those leagues in the next version of FIFA 09?

David Grant: For confidentiality reasons, I cannot release that information.

What features would you put in FIFA 09 if you were a producer for FIFA 2009?

David Grant: I would keep the focus mostly on gameplay and making players act as they do in real life. I would also like to see players change and grow as they do throughout the regular season so I would work on a feature that would allow that.
I would also eventually like to see the user be able to create their own assets that could be used in game and shared among other gamers.

Which band/music you think should be in EA Trax for FIFA 09?

David Grant: I like discovering new bands in different regions so it would be great if we could get a good range of artists from every country to put into the game.

FIFA 08 Official Patch 2.

December 5, 2007

An user of the official FIFA 08 forum just said that:

JuventinoSochi: “It fixes all LAN or DIP games problems, and after match end, you can save it in demo!! it’s awesome!!! P.S. In 1-2 days EASO will be upgraded to this patch!!”

EA has today announced that FIFA 08, the latest and possibly greatest title in the long-running series, has become the first title released in 2007 to reach one million sales at UK retail. The publisher cites a host of reasons for the game’s success, including the brand new game engine, the extensive in-game licenses (including the Premier and Coca-Cola leagues with all the official teams and players), the inclusion of the FA Cup and the host of problems reported with its rival PES 2008.

One of the most famous soccer moves is the Rainbow Kick (aka Lambretta). It involves placing the feet on each side of the ball, rolling the ball up the back of the leg with the other, then flicking the ball over the head like a rainbow and landing it in front of you. It is easy to achieve but very difficult to master. Mastering it involves running full speed with the ball and flicking it over the head and collecting it at the feet without stopping or slowing down much, and continuing the run.The Rainbow Kick has now been added to FIFA 08 and because it’s difficult to pull off in real life, it’s even MORE fun to use in FIFA 08. Not only is it fun, but it is a very effective way to beat the defender and create goal scoring opportunities. Watch as SportsGamer breaks down this skill move and shows you how to add it to your game today.

Quick Setup

Step 1 – Hold the left trigger (also known as the L2 button)

Step 2 – While holding the left trigger, tap the right analog stick (R3) once back and then twice forward.

SportsGamer tip: To perform this well, timing is required. Practice this in the Arena for a few minutes and you should have a basic understanding to how it’s done. Also, the better skilled the player, the less timing is required to pull this move off.

Pulling off the Rainbow kick requires that you understand how to use the right analog stick controls. EA has added new skill moves to FIFA 08, and to pull them off you need to hold down L2 and then flicking the right analog stick in the appropriate direction for different moves. To perform the Rainbow kick, you need to hold L2, then flick back on the right analog stick once, and then forward on the right analog stick twice. Here’s an illustration of how it’s done when running from right to left:

Remember you need to be holding down on the L2 button, which is also called the left trigger. Watch what this looks like when performed with good timing.

Play Breakdown

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo has the ball and is moving down the touchline in an attempt to send in a cross. Ronaldo is one of the fastest players in the game, and can often simply run past defenders. However, when facing a skilled opponent, you will often find that Ronaldo, or any attacking player for that matter, loses the ball because of a hard challenge. Notice in the image to the left that the defender is about 2 yards closer to the goal than Ronaldo. This is plenty of room for the defender to step in and win the ball so Ronaldo is going to have to rely on his skill in this scenario, not his speed. In the image to the right you see that Ronaldo has begun the Rainbow kick. Again, this is done by holding the left trigger, and flicking the right analog stick back once and twice forward.

The ball is going over Ronaldo’s head and the defender is still in good position in the image to the left. However, just at the point where the ball begins to come back to the ground the defender stops to admire the skills of the attacker. When this happens the attacker gains anywhere from 3-5 yards of separation.

By performing the Rainbow kick Ronaldo has now move the ball further along the sideline and gained several yards of separation from the defender. It is important to note that the defender will do a super-speedup to recover, but if the attacker is fast this won’t matter. Here you can see that Ronaldo has plenty of space to cross the ball for a scoring opportunity. The end result is a crossed ball into the penalty box. Final ThoughtsThe Rainbow kick is extremely fun to pull off in FIFA 08. Part of it is because it’s not a move easily pulled off in real soccer, so it’s a great way to surprise your opponent. In addition, if you score because of the Rainbow kick this leads to great trash-talk fodder. SportsGamer recommends taking the time to learn how to use the new advanced skills the EA has put into the game because it really can separate the elite FIFA gamers from the rest of the pack. If you’re still unsure how to utilize this skill, make sure to watch the video above for several great examples.
